If You're in the US (the easier case)

How to Prevent Losing Your IDP

Photograph it. Front and back. Email to yourself and your travel companion. Photos do not replace the physical IDP for driving, but they help with police reports and rental disputes.
Store it at your accommodation when not driving. Many travelers keep their IDP in the hotel safe and only carry it when they're behind the wheel.
Keep your US license + IDP together when driving. Both are required to legally drive abroad — an IDP alone is not valid.

What If Your IDP Was Stolen (Not Just Lost)?

Report the theft in this order:

Local police: get a written police report ("denuncia" in Italian/Spanish, "rapport de police" in French, equivalent elsewhere). This may help with rental car insurance claims, and is sometimes required by travel insurers.

What About Geneva Convention 1949 IDPs from Other Countries?

A common question: can I just get an IDP from a different country while I'm abroad?

Generally no. IDPs are issued by your country of license. If you hold a US license, only AAA or AATA can legitimately issue your IDP. Foreign automobile associations — like the AA in the UK, ADAC in Germany, or RACE in Spain — issue IDPs only for their citizens, not yours. Applying as a US license holder will be refused.

The one narrow exception: some US territories (such as Puerto Rico residents holding PR licenses) can occasionally apply through Spanish or Caribbean automobile associations in extreme cases. This is rare and typically not faster than AATA.

Common Scenarios

"I lost my IDP on the plane to Italy. My rental starts tomorrow."

You cannot get an IDP in 24 hours abroad. Realistic options:

Cancel the rental and request a refund (deposit may be lost).
Try the rental counter anyway — some agencies will accept just the US license + an apology, especially if you prepaid. This is a coin flip and varies by branch.
Switch to taxi, train, or hired-driver transport.

"I lost my IDP but my US license is fine. Can I just use the US license?"
