India Road Trip Guide for Americans (2026)
India's best road trips are car-with-driver trips — $30–60/day all-in. Goa is the one self-drive exception (scooters). You'll still want an IDP as backup ID and for any self-drive segment.

1. Golden Triangle (Delhi → Agra → Jaipur)

India's most famous tourist circuit, and the right first trip. Three world-class cities, the Taj Mahal, Mughal palaces, and Rajasthani forts — all on smooth expressways with a hired driver.
Day-by-day
- Days 1–2 — Delhi: Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar.
- Day 3 — Delhi to Agra: 230 km on the Yamuna Expressway, ~3.5 hours.
- Day 4 — Agra: Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort, Itimad-ud-Daulah ("baby Taj").
- Day 5 — Agra to Jaipur: 240 km via Fatehpur Sikri (UNESCO site), ~5 hours.
- Days 6–7 — Jaipur: Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar.
- Return: Fly or drive Jaipur back to Delhi (270 km, 5 hours).

The most cinematic road trip in India: palaces in every city, the Thar Desert, camels at sunset, and that distinctive Rajasthani color palette. Roads between cities are mostly good 2-lane highways.

- Jaipur (start): Day 1–2 — Amber Fort, City Palace, markets.
- Pushkar: 145 km / 3 hours. Lake town, sacred Brahma temple, day 3.
- Jodhpur: 200 km / 4 hours from Pushkar. The Blue City + Mehrangarh Fort, days 4–5.
- Jaisalmer: 285 km / 5 hours from Jodhpur. Desert fort, camel safari overnight, days 6–7.
- Udaipur: 490 km / 9 hours from Jaisalmer (consider a flight). Lake Palace, City Palace, days 8–9.
- Return: Day 10 — drive or fly back to Delhi/Jaipur.

3. Kerala Backwaters Loop

- Kochi (start): Days 1–2 — Fort Kochi, Chinese fishing nets, Mattancherry Palace.
- Munnar: 130 km / 4 hours. Tea plantations at 5,000+ feet, days 3–4.
- Alleppey (Alappuzha): 175 km / 4.5 hours. Houseboat overnight on the backwaters, day 5.
- Varkala or Trivandrum: 160 km / 3.5 hours. Beach and temples, days 6–7.

Best season: November–March. Monsoon (June–August) is dramatic and many roads flood.
4. Himalayan Foothills (Delhi → Manali → Leh)

The big one — and the one to attempt only if you're an experienced mountain driver or, much more commonly, with a hired driver. The Manali–Leh highway is one of the most spectacular drives in the world, but it has unguarded drops, altitudes above 17,000 feet, and a short open-season.
Route overview
- Delhi → Manali: 540 km via NH3, overnight bus or 12+ hour drive. Manali sits at 6,700 ft.
- Manali → Keylong → Sarchu → Leh: 475 km, normally driven over 2 days with overnight at Sarchu (14,000 ft, plan for altitude).
- Leh: Acclimatize 2 days minimum before doing day trips to Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, Khardung La pass (18,380 ft).
Open season: Mid-June through mid-September only. Snow closes the passes the rest of the year.

The one Indian road trip where self-driving is the standard for foreigners. Goa is small, coastal, and ridden almost entirely on rented scooters. Helmet mandatory, IDP required.

- Goa airport (Dabolim / Mopa) → Anjuna: 40 km / 1.5 hours. Hippy market, Anjuna Beach.
- Anjuna → Vagator → Morjim: 12 km / 30 min. Quieter beaches, Russian/Israeli traveler scenes.
- South to Panjim: 25 km / 1 hour. Portuguese-era capital, Latin Quarter.
- South Goa — Palolem: 75 km / 2 hours from Panjim. Quietest beaches, beach huts.
Cost estimate: ₹400–₹800/day for a Honda Activa, ₹1,000–₹2,000/day for a Royal Enfield. Petrol roughly ₹100/liter.
Best season: November–March. Monsoon (June–September) shuts most beach shacks.
Goa Police note: Tourist-area checkpoints are routine in North Goa. Carry your IDP, passport, helmet on head — and politely refuse if asked for cash.
Planning an India Road Trip — The Practical Stuff
- Distances are deceiving. 200 km in India often takes 5 hours, not 3. Towns, level crossings, animals, and lane mergers slow average speeds dramatically off the major expressways.
- Hire through a reputable platform. Savaari, MakeMyTrip Cabs, and your hotel are the safest. Confirm the driver's English, the car's age, and whether fuel/tolls are included.
- Pay your driver kindly. Multi-day trips often have the driver sleeping in or near the car. Buy his meals, give him a clean room when feasible, and tip ₹200–₹500/day at the end.
- Cash and UPI: India runs on UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe). Even highway dhabas accept it. Carry small notes (₹100, ₹200) for tipping, parking, and washroom fees.
- FASTag tolls: National Highway toll plazas need a FASTag transponder. Any reputable rental will have one — confirm at pickup.
- Night driving: Avoid where possible. Truck headlights are blinding, livestock is harder to see, and rural roads have no shoulder.
- Permits: Some areas (Ladakh, Sikkim, parts of Arunachal Pradesh) require Inner Line Permits. Your driver/agency arranges these.
- SIM card / data: Buy a Jio or Airtel tourist SIM at the airport. Google Maps offline works well but a live data signal helps in cities.
