Driving in India: 25 Tips for Americans

Before You Go (Tips 1–8)

  1. Get your IDP first. $20 from AAA or AATA, valid one year. It's required for any self-drive segment and useful as backup ID. Don't trust eBay or Amazon "IDPs" — they're counterfeit.
  2. Hire a driver. This is the single most useful tip. ₹2,500–₹5,000/day ($30–$60) gets you an A/C sedan with a driver who knows traffic, parking, and the local language. For most foreign tourists, this is the right call.
  3. Book the driver through a vetted platform. Savaari, MakeMyTrip Cabs, Yatra, or your hotel. Confirm fuel, tolls, driver food, and his English.
  4. Build a LEFT-side mental model if you'll self-drive. Watch a few YouTube videos of UK / Indian dashcam footage before you arrive. Spend 30 minutes in a quiet area before tackling traffic.
  5. Reserve an automatic transmission in advance. Default Indian rentals are manual. Automatics (Hyundai Creta, Mahindra XUV) carry a 30–50% premium and need 2+ weeks lead time in peak season.
  6. Buy an Indian SIM at the airport. Jio or Airtel tourist SIMs are cheap. Live data signal helps for Google Maps and UPI payments.
  7. Install UPI apps before arrival — PhonePe, Google Pay India. Even highway dhabas and toll booths accept UPI. Carry small notes (₹100, ₹200) for tipping.
  8. Travel insurance check: Confirm your travel/health policy covers India including motorbike riding (many exclude it). US credit card CDW often excludes India entirely.

On the Road (Tips 9–22)

  1. Drive on the LEFT, always. The hardest moment is pulling out of a parking lot or hotel driveway. Conscious left every time.
  2. Helmet on every scooter, every time. ₹1,000 fine if you skip it, plus the actual safety case. Pillion passenger too.
  3. Drive slowly. Indian roads work because everyone moves slowly and watches everyone. Speed is what gets tourists in trouble.
  4. Use your horn as a signal, not as aggression. A short tap means "I'm here / overtaking on your right." Trucks have "HORN OK PLEASE" painted on the back — they expect you to.
  5. Cows on the road are real. Slow down, ease around, never honk aggressively at one. They're sacred and entirely unbothered.
  6. Avoid Old Delhi and Old Mumbai with a rental car. Lanes narrow to a meter. Park outside, walk in, or take a rickshaw.
  7. Stay out of monsoon flood zones. June–September floods entire cities (Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai). Rental insurance often excludes water damage.
  8. FASTag for tolls. Every reputable rental has a FASTag transponder — confirm at pickup. Without it, you pay double at the booth.
  9. Fuel up at branded stations. HP, Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum. Backroad bottled-petrol shacks are a last resort.
  10. Don't drink and drive. BAC limit is 0.03% — one beer over the line. First-offense fine is ₹10,000 plus possible jail.
  11. If pulled over, present your IDP, US license, passport, and rental papers. Stay calm. The officer will issue an e-challan if there's a violation — pay via UPI or card.
  12. Refuse cash settlements. Politely ask for the official e-challan with QR code. The system is transparent and protects you.
  13. E-challan portal: Check echallan.parivahan.gov.in with your rental plate before returning the car. Pay any pending tickets there to avoid the agency's admin fee.
  14. Park where attendants ("parking-wallah") work. Tip ₹10–₹30 on the way out. They watch your car, save the spot, and know which side is safer.
  15. Tip your driver well at the end of multi-day trips. ₹200–₹500/day is customary. They often sleep in or near the car.
  16. Stop for chai every 2 hours. Highway dhabas are fast, cheap, safe, and your driver knows the good ones. It's part of the road-trip culture.

Useful Hindi Phrases (Tips 23–24)

English will get you 80% of the way in major cities and on highways. These phrases earn smiles everywhere and help in rural areas.

  1. Greetings & courtesy:
    • "Namaste" (nuh-mus-tay) — Hello / Greetings
    • "Dhanyavaad" (dhun-yuh-vaad) — Thank you
    • "Maaf kijiye" (maaf ki-jee-yay) — Excuse me / sorry
    • "Haan" / "Nahin" — Yes / No
  2. Driving and travel:
    • "Kitna hai?" (kit-na hai) — How much is it? (parking, fuel, tip)
    • "Driving license" — Same word; used universally
    • "Kahan hai?" (ka-haan hai) — Where is it?
    • "Petrol pump kahan hai?" — Where is the petrol pump?
    • "Rukiye" (ru-kee-yay) — Stop / wait (to your driver)
    • "Aage" / "Peeche" — Forward / Backward
    • "Baayen" / "Daayen" — Left / Right

If Something Goes Wrong (Tip 25)

  1. In an accident:
    • 1. Don't move the vehicle if anyone is injured. Move it if it's blocking traffic and everyone is fine.
    • 2. Call your hotel or agency first — they're your fastest support, with local language and connections.
    • 3. Call 112 — India's unified emergency number (police + ambulance + fire). English supported.
    • 4. Document everything: Photos of plates, damage, position. Note other driver's name, license number, phone.
    • 5. Call your rental agency for instructions before signing anything or paying anyone.
    • 6. Contact your travel insurance / US Embassy if there are injuries or you're detained.

Important: Indian law expects you to stop at any accident you witness and help if you can — Good Samaritan protections were added in the 2019 Act, so you cannot be held liable for helping. But for foreign tourists in an accident you caused, getting your hotel or agency involved fast is the single best move.
