South Africa Road Trip Guide for Americans
Five tested routes — the Garden Route, the Cape Town loop, Kruger self-drive, Drakensberg + Sani Pass into Lesotho, and Cape Agulhas. Drive on the LEFT. Bring your IDP — SAPS roadblocks are common.
Best seasons: October–April (Cape + Garden Route), May–September (Kruger, drier and easier game viewing).
Route 1 — The Garden Route (5–7 days)
The undisputed classic. Cape Town to Port Elizabeth along the N2 — pristine beaches, indigenous forest, whale watching at Hermanus, oyster towns, and the bungee-jump capital of the world. Modern roads throughout. The single best introduction to driving in South Africa.
- Day 1: Cape Town (CPT) → Hermanus via Sir Lowry's Pass (~120 km on N2). Whale watching season is June–November. Overnight in Hermanus.
- Day 2: Hermanus → Mossel Bay via Caledon and the N2 (~330 km). Optional detour through the Overberg wheat fields.
- Day 3: Mossel Bay → Knysna (~70 km). The Knysna Heads, lagoon, and old-growth Tsitsikamma forests start here. Overnight Knysna.
- Day 4: Knysna → Plettenberg Bay → Tsitsikamma National Park (~80 km). Suspension bridge over the Storms River; bungee at Bloukrans (the highest commercial jump in the world).
- Day 5: Tsitsikamma → Jeffreys Bay → Port Elizabeth (PLZ, ~180 km). World-famous surf at J-Bay. Drop the car at PLZ or continue.
- Day 6–7 (optional): Add Addo Elephant National Park near PE (45 min from PLZ) for a 1–2 day mini-safari — much closer than Kruger.
Tolls budget: ~R150–R250 (N2 partial). Best season: November–April for beaches; June–November for whale watching. Difficulty: Easy — well-maintained N2 the entire way.
Route 2 — Cape Town & Winelands Loop (3–4 days)
Cape Town has more world-class day-drives within a 90-minute radius than almost anywhere else. The Cape Peninsula, the Winelands, and Hout Bay are all easy returns. Stay in Cape Town, drive outward, come back each night.
- Day 1: Cape Town → Stellenbosch + Franschhuek wineries (~50 km out). 4–6 estates in a day. Don't drink and drive — SA BAC is 0.05% and Metro Police run weekend roadblocks. Hire a wine-tour driver or use Uber.
- Day 2: Cape Town → Chapman's Peak Drive → Hout Bay → Cape Point Nature Reserve → return via Simon's Town (penguins at Boulders Beach) and Muizenberg (~120 km loop). One of the world's great coastal drives.
- Day 3: Cape Town → Bo-Kaap → Signal Hill → Table Mountain cableway. Park in the city; minimal driving but maximum sightseeing.
- Day 4 (optional): Cape Town → Paternoster on the West Coast (~150 km up R27). Empty white beaches, seafood lunch, return same day.
Tolls budget: ~R50 (Chapman's Peak has a small toll — R55 per car). Best season: November–March; winter is wet and windy. Difficulty: Easy — but Chapman's Peak is a cliffhanger road with no guardrails. Drive slowly.
Route 3 — Kruger National Park Self-Drive (5–7 days)
South Africa is the world's best self-drive safari destination, and Kruger is the headline act. The park is 350 km long with a network of paved and well-graded gravel roads, internal rest camps where you sleep, and the Big Five all within reach. A sedan is fine for the main road network.
- Day 1: Joburg (JNB) → Kruger Gate / Paul Kruger Gate or Numbi Gate (~430 km on the N4 east, ~5 hours). Enter Kruger by 3pm. Overnight at Skukuza camp (the main "town" inside the park).
- Day 2: Skukuza → Lower Sabie game drive (~50 km on H4-1). One of the densest predator routes in Africa. Overnight Lower Sabie.
- Day 3: Lower Sabie → Satara (~85 km). Central plains, lions, cheetah country.
- Day 4: Satara → Olifants camp (~80 km). Cliffside camp with epic views over the Olifants River.
- Day 5: Olifants → exit at Phalaborwa or Orpen → return to Joburg via Panorama Route (Blyde River Canyon, God's Window, ~5 hrs).
- Day 6–7 (optional): Add 1–2 nights in the Panorama Route towns (Graskop, Hazyview) for canyon viewpoints and waterfalls.
Kruger rules: Stay in your vehicle except at designated picnic spots and rest camps. Speed limit 50 km/h on tar, 40 km/h on gravel — both ticketed. Gates close at sunset. Don't feed or approach wildlife. Don't off-road. Rangers ticket and evict.
Booking: Reserve SANParks rest camps at sanparks.org 6–12 months ahead — they sell out fast for SA school holidays and US summer.
4x4 needed? No. Main Kruger network is paved or smooth gravel. A sedan, SUV, or bakkie all work.
Route 4 — Drakensberg + Sani Pass into Lesotho (5 days)
The Drakensberg ("Dragon Mountain") is South Africa's alpine spine, a UNESCO World Heritage site of cliffs, San rock art, and basalt amphitheatres. The big payoff: climbing the Sani Pass in a 4x4 into the Kingdom of Lesotho — Southern Africa's only sky country. The pass is officially a separate border post.
- Day 1: Durban (DUR) → Champagne Castle / Central Drakensberg (~230 km via N3 + R74). Overnight Champagne Castle Hotel or Cathedral Peak.
- Day 2: Day hike — Cathedral Peak, Tugela Falls, or the Amphitheatre at Royal Natal. Return to base.
- Day 3: Drive south along the foothills (R600, R617) to Underberg (~250 km). Overnight Underberg or Himeville. Confirm 4x4 rental ready for Sani Pass.
- Day 4: Sani Pass border post → climb to Sani Top, Lesotho. Bring passport — Lesotho is a separate country with its own border control. Higest pub in Africa at the top. Sleep in Lesotho or return.
- Day 5: Return via the Midlands Meander to Durban or Joburg.
Sani Pass requires a 4x4. SA border post will turn back sedans and crossovers. The pass is a steep, switchback gravel road that climbs 1,330m in 8 km. Most chains (Avis, Europcar) explicitly forbid taking a 2WD up Sani. Either book a 4x4 specifically or join a guided Sani Pass tour from Underberg (~R1,200/person).
Best season: March–May and September–November (avoid winter snow at the top and summer rain washing out the pass).
Route 5 — Cape Agulhas, Africa's Southern Tip (2–3 days)
Most travelers think Cape Point is the southernmost tip of Africa — it isn't. The real southern tip, and where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans officially meet, is Cape Agulhas, 230 km southeast of Cape Town. Fewer crowds, a working lighthouse, and a marker stone you can stand on.
- Day 1: Cape Town → Hermanus (whale watching) → Stanford → Bredasdorp → L'Agulhas (~230 km, ~3h). Overnight at the small fishing village of L'Agulhas or nearby Struisbaai.
- Day 2: Visit the southernmost tip marker and lighthouse (1849, second-oldest still working in SA). Then explore Arniston (a perfectly preserved fishing village). Return to Cape Town or push on toward Mossel Bay for the Garden Route.
- Day 3 (optional): Detour to De Hoop Nature Reserve — pristine dunes, whale calving in winter, almost no tourists.
Tolls budget: ~R0 (back roads, no major tolls). Difficulty: Easy. Best season: Year-round; winter is whale season.
Planning Notes for a South African Road Trip
- One-way drops: Joburg → Cape Town and Cape Town → Joburg one-ways are popular for combining Kruger + Garden Route. Expect R2,000–R4,000 ($110–$220) in one-way fees.
- Distances are bigger than they look. Joburg → Cape Town is 1,400 km — a 14-hour drive, not a day trip. Fly between the two and rent on each end.
- Fuel is widely available. Petrol stations are attendant-served everywhere; tip the attendant R5–R10 if they wash your windshield or check oil.
- Security awareness: Keep doors locked, windows up, and valuables out of sight in Joburg CBD, certain Cape Town areas after dark, and at any traffic light in a major urban area. "Smash and grab" attempts are real but extremely rare on the tourist routes covered above.
- SA national holidays + school holidays (mid-December to mid-January especially) clog the N1, N2, and N3 with traffic — and rentals + accommodations double in price.
- GPS: Google Maps works well in cities, on N-routes, and inside Kruger. Tracks4Africa ($) is the gold standard for safari and off-grid navigation.
