AAA has branches, and a branch can produce a permit in the time it takes to fill in a one-page form.
So the same-day question reduces to a much narrower one: is there a AAA branch within reach that issues the permit at the counter rather than forwarding it for mailing? That answer is not uniform. Regional AAA clubs run their own service menus, and the office two towns over may work differently from yours.

Most likely to issue on the spot
Larger full-service branches in and around metropolitan areas, the kind with a travel desk, passport photo equipment and several staff. If a branch advertises travel services broadly, it is the better bet.
Less likely
Small satellite offices, insurance-focused locations, and counters inside other businesses. Many of these handle IDPs only by taking your paperwork and forwarding it, which is not a same-day outcome even though you visited in person.
The only reliable method
Call ahead and confirm your branch issues while you wait. Every other approach — online lists, forum posts, assuming your local office is like the one someone described in another state — is guesswork on a day when you cannot afford it.
Shortlist three branches before you start dialling. In most metro areas at least one of the three will say yes, and having alternatives means a single no does not end your day.
The Phone Call That Decides Everything
Most failed same-day attempts trace back to a vague phone call. Someone asks do you do international driving permits? hears yes, drives over, and discovers that yes meant we accept applications and mail them. Ask these four things instead.
- If I bring everything today, do I leave with the permit in hand? This is the question. Everything else is secondary.
- Do I need an appointment, or are walk-ins fine? Most branches take walk-ins for this, but some prefer appointments and a few require them.
- Can you take the passport photos here, and what does that cost? Many branches can. Knowing in advance saves a detour to a pharmacy counter.

No false hope and no scam routes. These are the only real moves available inside twenty-four hours.
First: check whether you actually need one
Requirements vary a great deal by country. Some destinations require an IDP by law, some rental companies demand one regardless of local law, and plenty of countries accept a US license on its own. Five minutes here can dissolve the whole emergency.

Start with the nearest and work outward. A two-hour drive is a perfectly rational trade against a trip you have already paid for. Travellers do exactly this the day before departure more often than you would guess.
Third: if nothing is reachable, plan around not having it
Contact your rental company and ask directly what they will accept from a US licence holder. Consider whether a driver in your party already holds a valid IDP. Consider trains, transfers or hired drivers for the first days while a permit reaches you. None of this is what you wanted to read, but it beats buying a fake.
What not to do
Do not buy an instant permit from a site that promises delivery in minutes. Do not print anything that calls itself an international driver license. Presenting a fabricated document to foreign police is a considerably worse problem than arriving without a permit at all.
There Is No Legitimate Instant or Digital IDP
Search for a same-day permit and the results fill with ads promising an instant IDP, a digital IDP delivered in minutes, or an international driver license valid for years. Urgent travellers are the ideal target for this, because urgency suppresses the instinct to check.
A real IDP, without exception:
- Is a physical paper booklet with your photograph attached, so it cannot be delivered electronically.
- Comes only from AAA or AATA, the two issuers authorized by the US State Department.
- Costs about $20. Not $49, not $79, not a discounted multi-year bundle.
- Is valid for one year, or until your US license expires if that comes first. There is no ten-year IDP.
- Is a translation of your existing license, carried alongside it. It never replaces it.
The tell is usually the promise itself. A document that requires a photograph, a stamp and a signature from an authorized office cannot be produced by a checkout page in five minutes. Anything sold on that basis is a novelty print, and rental counters and traffic police in the countries where IDPs actually matter have seen them all before.
